Dr. Juan Carlos Aravena Donaire
Associate researcher

JC Aravena obtained his undergraduate and Master degrees at the Faculty of Sciences Universidad de Chile, Santiago Chile, in 1985 and 1994, respectively. From 1994 to 2002 he worked as Research Associate at the Laboratory of Plant Ecology and Systematics of the same institution. In 2002, together with to be incorporated as Research Associate at the Center of Quaternary Studies (CEQUA) in Punta Arenas-Chile, JC Aravena initiated his Ph.D. program at the University of Western Ontario, London-Ontario, Canada. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in August 2007 under the advice of Dr. Brian H. Luckman, producing a thesis on the reconstruction of the fluctuations of selected glaciers of the southern Andes. In January 2014, JC Aravena was incorporated to the Universidad de Magallanes as Research Coordinator of the Program Gaia-Antarctica, funded by the Chilean Ministry of Education, and from 2016 was designated as Director of the Antarctic and Subantarctic Programs of the Universidad de Magallanes, now Gaia Antarctica Research Center. His research experience includes continuous participation from 1991 as Co-Principal investigator and Principal Investigator, in research projects funded by Chilean (Fondecyt, CORFO, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Economy, INACH), and international (National Geographic, European Commission, Swedish Cooperation, Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, BMBF-Germany) funding agencies.
