Dr. Concepción Azcón
International collaborator
Concepción Azcón González de Aguilar is Research Professor of the National Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) at the Estación Experimental del Zaidín (EEZ), in Granada (Spain). She studied Biological Sciences at the Granada University and did her Ph. D. thesis at the EEZ, under the supervision of Dr. J. M. Barea. After post-doc stages in INRA-Dijon (France) and the Rothamsted Experimental Station (UK) she got a post as tenured scientist in the EEZ. Since then she works in the Soil Microbiology and Symbiotic Systems Department. She has devoted her scientific career to the study of arbuscular mycorrhizas (symbioses between plants and fungi widely distributed in nature, AM) and the interactions of AM with other soil microorganisms. She was Deputy Director of the EEZ since March 1998 to April 2007 and currently she is the head of the ‘Mycorrhizas’ research group at the EEZ. She has participated in numerous research projects funded mainly by the Spanish government and the European Commission. As a result of her long research activity, she is author of about 130 scientific publications included in the Science Citation Index in the field of soil microbiology, arbuscular mycorrhizas and plant-microbe interactions. Along her career she has contributed to reveal the important role of AM in protecting plants against stresses and helped to elucidate the mechanisms involved in such effects. She has also contributed to the knowledge of the ecology of AM fungi and the factors that influence the structuring of their communities.
