Dr. Pedro Zamorano
Associate Researcher
Pedro Zamorano is the director of Extremophiles Microorganisms Laboratory, in the Antofagasta Institute at the University of Antofagasta. His applied work focuses specifically on the molecular design of neuroendocrine factors, lentivirus and biotechnology applications of thermozymes. He is passionate about knowing the molecular strategies developed by microorganisms to inhabit in different extreme environments and how these biomolecules can be applied to industry. His academic training was done at the University of Concepción, Chile, where he pursued his undergrad studies as a biochemist. Later, he moved to the USA to obtain a PhD degree in Endocrinology at the Medical College of Georgia. He also holds a Postdoctoral and Research Associate positions at Stanford University. In Chile, he held a position of Assistant Professor, ICBM at the Universidad de Chile. Currently is Associate Professor, at the University of Antofagasta. Professor Zamorano began his research on extremophiles by studying the cultivable thermophilic microorganisms present at the Geothermal Field of El Tatio, over 10 years ago.
Currently, his research team works on the design of molecular tools that facilitate the production of thermoestable biomolecules of biotechnological interest through synthetic biology. In addition to belonging to the NEXER Network, Dr Zamorano serve at the FONDEF IDeA program at the Health Committee and the Valorization of University Research, FONDEF–‐VIU program of FONDEF, CONICYT.
